What has been happening in room 12?

We visited the museum to learn about the Maori celebration 'Matariki'.

What wonderful characters room 12 are.

News from room 12

Room 12 have discovered many facts about the amazing creatures that live in our oceans.
We are shocked to learn of all the plastic that is floating in the ocean and endangering the lives of the creatures we love.
We want everyone to think about this question. Is that piece of plastic you are about to use worth it?

Character Parade

On Friday 2oth June we had a Book Character Parade as part of the 2008 Bucklands Beach Primary School Book Fair. As you can see looking at the pictures the students of Room 10 got fully behind supporting the Book Character Parade. The students and their parents must be congratulated for all their effort and enthusiasm they put in to create some wonderful costumes. We are lucky to have some real characters in Room Ten.

Room 8 got dressed up on Friday 20th of June for the school Book Character Parade.
So many parents and children were involved in our great day.
We went on the stage to show off our fantastic costumes.

Room 11

Recently the children in Room 11 have been looking at the food chain in the sea.
We made a 'food chain' dance showing how the different creatures feed off each other. We are worried about the amount of pollution in the sea which will change how the food chain works.

In the ocean the food chain is balanced so that there is enough food for all the different kinds of fish and animals to eat. When humans catch too many fish and pollute the water with their rubbish the food chain becomes unbalanced and life in the sea begins to die. By Riana

Rock pools in Room 13

In Term2 Room13 carries on their Rock Pools study. They made rock pools in the class using newspaper and flour. The construction of these rock pools is similar to what they have seen on their beach trips. As part of this hands-on activity, they are also practising to write acrostic poems about "crabs". Here is some of their work.

Room 8 Rockets

In room 8 we have been looking at the letter 'Rr' and we are enjoying meeting our new classmates.

What do we want to be

In room 7 we read a story together called..."When I grow up". As a class we discussed jobs that we could do when we grow up. Some of our ideas are displayed below.

Room 14's fish tiles

Room 14 are studying Marine Reserves. We made clay fish tiles.


We looked at the different shapes and patterns on fish.



We rolled the clay so that it was even in thickness.


Next we drew the outline of our fish.



We cut around the outline.



We used wire netting, material and pinecones to make the patterns on the fish.



We are leaving our fish to dry for two weeks and then we will fire them in the kiln.



We plan to use glaze our fish.

This means that we will again fire the tiles.

Portraits by Room 10 - Term 1, Week 11, 2008

Mrs Driver has been working very hard with Room 10 to teach us all about portraits. A portrait tells us about people. We did self-portraits, which are pictures about us.

1. We were learning how to apply paint using brushstrokes.
2. We were learning to create textures using the brushstrokes and carving into the background paint.
   
3. We were learning about proportions. Proportions are making sure all your features on your face are in the right place.
4. We made our portraits with mixed media (paint, pastel, collage paper).

The children start to paint their skin colour for the background of their face using brushstrokes.We painted our backgrounds with a thick layer of paint.

We used paint scrapers to add textures onto our backgrounds.
Mrs Driver glued down our faces onto the backgrounds.
We added are features using pastel and made sure we had our features in the right place.
