Junior Cross-Country Race Day:

This was most anticipated by our competitive lot of runners.
Many took part in the early morning before-school practice sessions with senior school students!
Students ran in year levels after completing warm-up stretches and finished with some fun 'wind down' activities. For some, the highlight was just wearing their whanau t-shirts!

N.B. for our overseas followers... and there are now a lot of you...
'whanau' is Maori for 'family' and it is our house system with students from every year level and
Year 6 Whanau Leaders chosen and voted by teachers and peers. [pronounced Far-no although some still incorrectly say Far-now!]]

Room 7 students are enjoying increasing their public performance confidence by singing into a microphone attached to a PA system in the class.

Islay-Karyn started the idea by receiving two trophies this week at the Auckland Country Music Awards in the city.
She sang "Train whistle blowing ...." and then that inspired others to have a go.

DRUMMING IN ROOM 8

Room 8 tried out the new djembe drums and had a great time playing copy-cat rhythm with Mrs Smith. Everyone got a turn to have a go and it soon became evident that there is plenty of talent in the class. The rest of the Junior classes are taking turns this week and next to experience the sheer physical fun of drumming!

Bongo the Clown visists BBPS Juniors

The Juniors had a surprise visit from Bongo the Clown on Tuesday afternoon.
He sang one of our favourite songs called The ukulele song and none of us believed him when he told us that his ukulele was actually his old guitar that had shrunk in the wash!

He did lots of magic tricks and we all laughed a lot when he did silly things like when he got the pizza stuck on his pants at the back.

Bongo also made a poodle and a sword for two very lucky children in the audience.

We couldn't wait to see what would come out of his little red suitcase next.

We had such a great time that we really hope Bongo will be able to come and visit us again sometime.....

BOOK WEEK ROOM 8

CURIOSITY, WONDERMENT AND AWE!
Room 8 have been entranced by the idea of castles, princes and princesses from the start of this year. We were lucky enough to have some really big , strong boxes come our way and decided to design and build a castle. We also looked at pictures of castles on the internet and drew up a list of properties that make castles what they are. We are very proud of our colour in pictures of castles and we have done some writing about the subject too.

In Room 7 we have:

been enjoying the new iPad. We have to take turns, be patient, share and offer positive comments. It is full of maths, spelling, reading, music and matching activities.
watched the Dr Seuss movie "Daisy-Head Mayzie" in which Mayzie finds that friends and family are more important than fame and money. You'll be pleased to know my class agreed.
learned the meaning of a 'keepsake' when Connor made his Dad a lovely card with words he thought out carefully. He was proud of his Dad passing his Law exams and wanted him to have a card he could treasure.

On a lighter note -
Last week half my class learned they were 'male' !! We came across the word 'female' in a book and ALL 22 of my students thought they were female!!

Biosphere!

Room 10 investigated the biosphere as part of our Motuihe topic. Firstly we brainstormed and investigated what a scientist is and we came up with brilliant ideas! We researched Native NZ animals found on Motuihe in pairs and we grouped the flora and fauna on Motuihe into two groups - animals and plants.

Junior School have seen the addition of extra seating today... they just seemed to appear!

We will feel the benefit of these seats every day.

Room 7 have enjoyed two different, yet similar music lessons with two different, yet similar teachers, recently! Mrs Johnson has enjoyed watching these teachers enjoy her class of fabulous children as much as she does!!! Way to go Room 7.

PLAYBALL in the Junior school

The great team of coaches from Playball kept the Juniors busy with ball skills for an hour today. The children were put into their class groups and moved around to each activity. There were five coaches, five groups of children and five teachers assisting. It was wonderful to see how each child participated with enthusiasm and enjoyment whilst learning and practicing great ball skills. We are looking forward to doing it all over again next week!

Recently Room 9 presented to the school assembly the water cycle. We felt very proud being up on the stage sharing what we had learned with our audience.

We are learning to find the letters on the keyboard of the laptops. We can type our names and we have been writing sentences with our buddies. Some of us are getting quite good at making capital letters and full stops too. We wear our computer safety lanyards. One day we will be able to publish our writing on the laptops.

A Visit from Cookie and Gizmo

On Friday afternoon I had my doggies visit Room 7 and Room 8. It was a nice follow-up to the Animal Management Study a week or so ago. As you can see the visit was a great success... and i apologise in advance to those parents who now have children nagging for a puppy!! From Mrs Johnson.

We had a visit from Animal Management who taught us how to treat dogs nicely and how to be safe around dogs.

We learnt to stand still and keep a close eye on dogs we don't know.

We know to ask the owner before we go up to, or touch any dog.

Symmetry and Flowers

Room 7 have been learning about symmetry and reflection.

We cut snowflake shapes and used mirror to check the reflection for symmetry.

Then... Last weekend, Jasmine went to the Howick Historical Village 'Old Fashioned Day' and learned to use doilies to make little flower posies.

She realised that our snowflakes would do the same job so she taught everyone how to make a posy for our Mums. Well done, Jasmine.

Room 8 learning about SHAPE.

Our Maths strand is about SHAPE. We have been discovering the names of the different shapes and learnt that the number of points that each shape has can help us to remember what their names are.

We built things out of the giant leggo block at lunch time.

Tomoko came to our class to show us how to fold paper into shape that can be made into other shapes. This is called origami.

We had great fun! Thank you Tomoko!

In The Light of the Moon... A Little Egg Lay on a Leaf...

We thoroughly enjoyed the dvd of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" today, and then followed it by listening to the story on a CD read by Eric Carle himself.
We enjoyed his accent as much as the story!
We then decorated a themed flag to go home with a leaf with a little Easter Egg on it.
We shall eat them "in the light of the moon!"

Last Day of Swimming for the Year.

Swimming has been ongoing since November last year.
What a fabulous stretch we have had.
I am pleased to say that in Room 7, I have not had a single note from a single parent excusing their child from swimming! Remembering that these children are only aged 5.
These photos speak for themselves the advantages gained by the students; many of whom did not like to get their faces wet earlier this year!!

Stuffed Easter Eggs

Room 7 had a lovely time making hanging stuffed Easter Eggs. We did a design with pencil, followed by permanent marker, colourful pastels and then dye. They are hanging up in the class and we welcome people to come and check them out.
As you can see last year's addition of classroom double doors and outside sink are a great asset.

After the Christchurch earthquake, Room 8, along with the rest of the school joined the whole of New Zealand in remembering and thinking about people who were effected by the earth quake. Everyone wore red, black and white. the children also made a banner to put up in the hall at assembly. It said: "We are thinking about the people of Christchurch today and wishing them well"

Room 12 researched the Treaty of Waitangi and talked about what a treaty is so that we were able to create a class treaty. We made a circle diagram so that we could share what we learnt.

Buddy Reading on a Thursday Afternoon.

For the last ten minutes of every Thursday, Room 15's Year 3 students come to Room 7 to share stories, poems, home learning and projects with us, and listen to our reading.

All students have an assigned 'buddy' and it is a highlight of the week to see their 'big buddies'.

Their delight in their 'big buddies' goes beyond 'buddy reading time' as was evident recently when Room 7's Year 1 students did their Assembly Class Presentation.

They were as excited about their buddies seeing them on stage, as they were their parents!!

MOTUIHE - Room 8

Our trip by ferry to the island Motuihe was awesome! The weather was perfect, the sights were beautiful and a load of fun was had by all. Thanks to all the wonderful parent helpers, the children were able to enjoy the day whilst learning along the way.

We have been learning how to blend colours to match our skin and hair.
We have been learning that your eyes go half way down your face and that they go in line with your ears.
Some of us didn't believe we have eyebrows! We had to check in the mirror!

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning the Juniors do Jamp Jam in the quad outside Rooms 7 & 8. We are still learning all actions to the different songs and if the teachers catch us making a really good effort, they give us a "gotcha". We fill in our name, classroom and Whanau on the gotcha and gets points for our Whanau for the week. The mums and dads join in and we have lots of fun!

Our whole school beach clean up day was a wonderful success. Thankfully, it was not too hot for the walk down to Eastern Beach. Room 6 picked up some interesting pieces of flotsam and jetsam: an old sports shoe, a hair brush and an earring! We took a well-deserved break for lunch in the park and then built a sandcastle together. To our great surprise, Santa arrived at the beach with a BIG bag of candy canes. What a treat.

Tabloid Sports

Tabloids on a Friday is always a great event in the Junior School. We invited the parents to come along and observe as the children moved through the various activities with their group leaders under the watchful eyes of the teachers. Great fun was had by all. An added highlight was a cool cup of Milo supplies by the Milo bus.

Fishing Rod Winner;

Bailey was so excited when his name was pulled out of the box by Mrs Bodley. After assembly he went immediately to phone his Mum the great news.
Bailey had entered a school-wide competition to win a fishing rod.
"The Minstrel" came to the school last term and entertained everyone with fishing songs, stories and dances. He left behind a lot of inspired children and the rod to be won.
Stories about fishing were written by most students and a committee of adults decided which top stories would go in the box.

Everyone cheered so loudly for you, Bailey, and we felt so pleased for you.
Here's hoping you have many hours of fishing fun with your friends and family.
Well done, Bailey.

Walk to School Bus

Lots of us walk to school with "Walking Bus" leaders who are parent members of the school. We enjoy chatting as we walk. We got pencil cases and things to go in them in assembly. There were lots of children who got to go up on stage and get one.

Summer Festival

On Thursday 11th of November, 2010, performers representing the Kapa Haka Group, Dance Group, Choir and Jump Jam Groups went down to Westfield Pakuranga to perform with other local schools as part of the Summer Festival celebrations.

The Jump Jam Group performed a medley of their routines including:

The Junior Dance Group performed 'I Just Want to be King' and the Senior Dance Group performed 'Time After Time'.

On Friday the 15th of October, Bucklands Beach Primary School celebrated the cultural diversity of our school with an International Day.

Part of our International Day celebration we were very privileged to have the Macleans College Korean Drum Group perform for us at our school assembly.

Children dressed up in clothes that represented the country they came from or countries that they identified with.

As you can see from the photos we have a diverse and vibrant school community!

Room 5 investigate Kiwis

Room 5 are working as a team to investigate the characteristics of kiwis. When we have shared what we have found we will paint kiwis for our calendar art ensuring we include all the special characteristics.

Junior Jump Jam

The Junior School has been rocking along this term with great enthusiasm to our new Jump Jam routines as you can see by these photos.

Along with these new Jump Jam routines we have also been learning Heart Jam in support of Kiwi kids with heart conditions. On Friday 28th May we used our newly learnt Heart Jam moves and participated in New Zealand's largest aerobics class.

Our Year 2 Jump Jam leaders have been doing a fantastic job up in front of the Junior School each Tuesday and Thursday morning.

Jiggles the Clown visits us.

On Friday the 14th of May, we had a visit from Jiggles the Clown. He was our school’s prize for winning the Bikewise Day earlier in the year. Out of many schools, we had the most percentage of children in the school ride bikes at our bike day – 87%.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and it gave us a lot to talk about and write about back in class.

The Chess Olympiad people

On Friday 5th of March we had a visit from a couple of people who had competed in the Dresden Chess Olympiad Competitions.
They showed us the basics of the game and then we had a turn setting out chess boards and practising the moves that each piece is allowed to do.

The lady, called Helen, learned Chess from her grandmother at age 3 and was winning lots of games by age 5!!

Splish Splash Day

All junior students took part in the yearly and much anticipated Splish Splash Day.
A variety of fun and challenging pool activities are followed by slippery slides, moonhoppers and water sprinkler fun.
It was a chance for parents, grandparents and other interested people to see the confidence and skill levels of the students in the pool.

Bike Wise Day

The whole school took part in a Manukau City schools' challenge to see which school could have the longest 'snake' of bikes.
We were the first school to do the challenge and it was an event enjoyed by all.
It was followed by parents and caregivers joining us for lunch.

The entire junior school are split into sports teams for term four.
There are between one and three children from each class in each team.
It gives the year 2 children a chance to be team leaders and make sure everyone in their team is happy and participating and meeting new people.
The teams rotate around activities that are organised and run by Year 6 students.
Some of the 18 activities are based on mixing and mingling and most are skill based as well.
Here are some photos showing what a great time is had each Friday, between 11 and 12 o'clock.

New Jump Jam Routine

The Jump Jam Leaders over the past couple of weeks have been learning a new routine called 'You Should Be'. This new routine was introduced to the Junior School this week and as you can see from this slideshow that the children have taken to this new routine with great enthusiasm.

Fun with Volume

This week Room 9 have been learning about Volume.

The learning intention was to work out the volume of each pile of cubes - including cubes we cannot see.

We worked collaboratively in pairs and used unifix cubes to build each shape.Most of us found the task challenging, requiring a lot of thinking and concentration.
At the end we built some other shapes with different volumes.
Aren't we CREATIVE?
We also looked at different sized containers and filling the containers up with beads to find out which would hold the most or the least.
Miss Chen was most impressed with the way we worked as a team, assisting one another and making sure everyone had a turn.
What an exciting and enjoyable week of learning about VOLUME!

Junior Pet Day Fun

On Thursday 20th August, our Junior School enjoyed an afternoon of fun with our visiting pets. There were lots of rabbits, cats, dogs, fish, snails, mice and soft toy animals. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and everyone enjoyed the pet parade at the end of the day. Family members were all welcome and it was particularly nice to see so many grandparents turn up.

All term 3, Room 7 have had a tally chart going with points being earned for fabulous behaviour and acts of kindness etc.
Waiheke whanau won and chose the movie Happy Feet as a reward.
Twenty three happy year one students enjoyed the movie on our giant interactive whiteboard.
There was also the added bonus of being allowed to bring "movie snacks" to eat in class.
Mrs J was very impressed by how many children took her up on the suggestion of carrot sticks and grapes as movie snacks!

National Sea Week

Room 1 children have been having lots of fun this week. They have been learning about different sea creatures and having fun and games with a large fishing net! The children enjoyed sorting and ordering a huge collection of shells, seaweed, smooth glass and rocks found of various beaches. We even had a piece of bone in our collection. The children were quick to spot that this did not fit into any of our categories! Yesterday we made sea creature masks and learnt some new 'Under The Sea' songs. We are really looking forward to our walk to Eastern Beach.

We are a class of Year 1 students and half of us have only been at school for a month. We have been focusing on listening to others, including others, helping others and sharing. We are pleased to report that we are pretty good at it.
We enjoy circle time which is when we share ideas, thoughts and information with others.
We have a plastic wand or a big plastic spider and you are only allowed to talk if you are holding it. We listen carefully to each other, then we ask questions, give compliments or suggestions. We have a special sharing circle every Friday and general news time every day.

Splish Splash Day 2009

We had extra splishing and splashing in the rain as well as in the pool.
On Tuesday the 24th of February, 2009, the junior school had their swimming day.
The children enjoyed demonstrating their water skills both in the pool and out, as they participated in a range of fun activities.

Discovery Time - Making Bridges and Ramps

In Room Seven we had an exciting two afternoons making bridges and ramps using different types of materials and equipment. We were working in small groups so we had to use our listening skills and co-operation. We had to share and take turns.
We had to find out what materials would make the best bridge and ramp for our toy car.
We enjoyed working together and had lots of fun!

Junior Dance Group

The Life and Times of Q Bear in Room 12

Q Bear is helping room 12 with their 'Skills for Growing' programme. Q Bear helped us set up our class treaty at the beginning of the year. Q Bear reminds us to be a safe, caring and sharing class at all times.

When Q Bear catches us being good we get a Q Bear card. Every Friday 3 Q bear cards are pulled out and those people get a reward from the goodies box.

Q Bear is helping us remember how to work successfully as a group. We listen to each other's ideas and work TOGETHER.

Who Let The Dogs Out?

During the junior production 'Over The Moon' Room 11 performed an energetic dance to a medley of songs about dogs. We had lots of fun! We especially liked dressing up and having face paint on.

Room 8 enjoyed dressing up and singing about Old Macdonald's farm for the Junior School Production. We had cows, sheep, pigs, dogs and ducks.

Room 12 have discovered many facts about the amazing creatures that live in our oceans.
We are shocked to learn of all the plastic that is floating in the ocean and endangering the lives of the creatures we love.
We want everyone to think about this question. Is that piece of plastic you are about to use worth it?

Character Parade

On Friday 2oth June we had a Book Character Parade as part of the 2008 Bucklands Beach Primary School Book Fair. As you can see looking at the pictures the students of Room 10 got fully behind supporting the Book Character Parade. The students and their parents must be congratulated for all their effort and enthusiasm they put in to create some wonderful costumes. We are lucky to have some real characters in Room Ten.

Room 8 got dressed up on Friday 20th of June for the school Book Character Parade.
So many parents and children were involved in our great day.
We went on the stage to show off our fantastic costumes.

Room 11

Recently the children in Room 11 have been looking at the food chain in the sea.
We made a 'food chain' dance showing how the different creatures feed off each other. We are worried about the amount of pollution in the sea which will change how the food chain works.

In the ocean the food chain is balanced so that there is enough food for all the different kinds of fish and animals to eat. When humans catch too many fish and pollute the water with their rubbish the food chain becomes unbalanced and life in the sea begins to die. By Riana

Rock pools in Room 13

In Term2 Room13 carries on their Rock Pools study. They made rock pools in the class using newspaper and flour. The construction of these rock pools is similar to what they have seen on their beach trips. As part of this hands-on activity, they are also practising to write acrostic poems about "crabs". Here is some of their work.

Room 8 Rockets

In room 8 we have been looking at the letter 'Rr' and we are enjoying meeting our new classmates.

In room 7 we read a story together called..."When I grow up". As a class we discussed jobs that we could do when we grow up. Some of our ideas are displayed below.

Room 14's fish tiles

Room 14 are studying Marine Reserves. We made clay fish tiles.

We looked at the different shapes and patterns on fish.

We rolled the clay so that it was even in thickness.

Next we drew the outline of our fish.

We cut around the outline.

We used wire netting, material and pinecones to make the patterns on the fish.

We are leaving our fish to dry for two weeks and then we will fire them in the kiln.

We plan to use glaze our fish.

This means that we will again fire the tiles.

Portraits by Room 10 - Term 1, Week 11, 2008

Mrs Driver has been working very hard with Room 10 to teach us all about portraits. A portrait tells us about people. We did self-portraits, which are pictures about us.

We were learning how to apply paint using brushstrokes.
We were learning to create textures using the brushstrokes and carving into the background paint.
We were learning about proportions. Proportions are making sure all your features on your face are in the right place.
We made our portraits with mixed media (paint, pastel, collage paper).

The children start to paint their skin colour for the background of their face using brushstrokes.We painted our backgrounds with a thick layer of paint.

We used paint scrapers to add textures onto our backgrounds.
Mrs Driver glued down our faces onto the backgrounds.
We added are features using pastel and made sure we had our features in the right place.
